I shall now attempt to combine all of the following references into this midweek: Catherine’s trip to Italy, some music history, a not-so-subtle plug for the upcoming Master Chorale concert, as well as a bit of theological contemplation. OK, here goes...
The choir anthem this past Sunday was by the composer Luigi Cherubini. As you might surmise from his name, he was Norwegian. Not really—of course he was ITALIAN (reference #1 complete). Cherubini (1760-1842) lived around the same time as Beethoven (1770-1827) and, although he was born in Italy, he spent most of his life in Paris. He was most famous for his operas, and he received many of the highest musical honors and awards in France during his lifetime. He was praised and admired by major composers like Beethoven, Schumann, Berlioz, Brahms, and Mendelssohn. (reference #2, check) However, while these composers and their music are still well known today, Cherubini faded into obscurity within fifty years of his death. His music is rarely performed today, although you will have a chance to hear his Requiem in C Minor performed by the Blacksburg Master Chorale on May 9th at the Moss Arts Center (3 down, one to go). ...
